The study of conflict, its causes and impacts is a key area of research for Orestone, and originates from intensive work carried out by Ian Betts in Indonesia. At Orestone we identify the underlying motivations for conflict, as well as its contributory factors and drivers, and we work to frame and scope it, aiming to understand the stakeholders, their positions and desired outcomes. Conflict is seen between ethnic and religious groups, among populations competing for local resources or those who are subject to adverse or undesired political and economic factors, communities impacted by military or national interests or even people who oppose development plans in their localities. Our findings contribute to corporate CSR reports and threat assessments as well as to government positions on conflict.
